アメリカにおける福音派と体罰支持の関係をGeneral Social Survey（GSS）を用いて分析した論文。論文が刊行された頃は、体罰の是非をめぐる議論が少なからず行われていた。福音派の人々が体罰を支持するという知見がしばしば発表されていた（p.131）。本論文が特に注目しているのは、福音派の価値観のどの側面がどのように体罰支持に対して関連するのかという問題である。福音派諸教派への所属状況というよりも、価値観や信仰の内容の詳細との関連を見ていくスタイルである。要旨からわかるように、福音派の価値観を、聖書の内容を全て真実と認識すること、性悪説、厳罰意識という主に三つの側面で捉えている。
価値観に重きを置いた研究であることもあり、福音派の人間観や教育観を細かく検討することに力が注がれている。なお、福音派の教育観の分析という点についていえば、Bartkowski and Ellison （1995）があり、福音派の育児書（ジェームス・ドブソンなどの本）が、主流派のそれと比較しつつ網羅的に検討されている（質的研究）。本論文単独で読むよりも、併せて読んだ方がより面白くなるに違いない（他にも福音派と体罰を扱った論文には、Capps (1992)、 Ellison (1996)、Ellison et al. (1996a、1996b)、 Ellison and Bradshaw (2009)、 Ellison et al. (2011) などがある）。
日本の宗教社会学におけるキリスト教研究ではあまり耳にしたことのないテーマと分析だったため、本論文を含む福音派と体罰研究は、なかなか印象深いものであった。同時に、日本で取り上げられるアメリカ社会学としても、管見の限りあまり耳にしないテーマでもあり、これも印象的であった。一般理論志向というよも「ローカル色」の強いテーマである。
