本論文の著者らによる『The Price of Free Denied』（Grim and Finke 2011）は宗教の国際比較分析における斬新な研究である。同書では「宗教的迫害」（Religious Persecution）に着目し、その国際比較分析用データを作成し、個別事例分析も踏まえながら計量分析が行われているからである。

こうした研究の礎の一つとなったのが本論文である。本論文においても宗教的迫害が扱われる。要約からわかるように、宗教的迫害の説明要因として、各国の宗教政策の違いを取り上げている。
私がいくつか補足すると、本論文のデータはその後続データも含めて、宗教関連データアーカイブスに寄託されており、関連文献も紹介されている（詳細は参考サイトを参照のこと）。要旨にはハンチントンの名前が挙がっているが、宗教をハンチントンの視角から分析した研究はいろいろと行われている。例えば、Breznau et al.（2011）やRafiq（2019）といった国際比較分析を挙げることができる。また、迫害の社会学的研究という点については、大量虐殺等の弾圧に関する実証研究も行われており（Owen et al. 2013）、本論文とも関連してくると考えられる。
